Birdy King Land is the game/cartoon you want to show to your parents or friends when introducing the Oculus Rift.
It is a short game (if you can call it so) where you will be on the VR roller coaster ride, trying to catch the bird that stole your precious burger. Throughout the game your character will be sitting in a sidecar, and watching your fellow “anteater” follow the bird thief.
This game looks absolutely amazing with the Oculus Rift, and even though the budget wasn’t huge for it, Backlight Studio completely nailed it with the immersion part. The characters themselves are really funny looking, animations are great, and that “flopping snout” while driving just gets me all the time. Why I did not want to call this a game is because you do not interact with anything. You just sit in one place and enjoy the ride. You will be driving on a train track, followed by a huge bird, almost driving off the cliff, and your mouth will be open all this time. I guarantee it!
This cartoonish Birdy King Land is actually free to get for everyone. It is made by French developers (the game is also in French but luckily you don’t have to read much) who are actually quite good at focusing on the details. I was very impressed by it, especially since it is free, and the updates are still coming (that fix some unnecessary sharp animations). Plus, the soundtrack is very uplifting. Once they get enough financial support, Backlight studio will make more projects like this that may let us interact this time.
If you want to get an early glance to VR cartoons, you might give this one a try. This free Birdy King Land runs super smoothly, weights only 440MB, and will give you an Indiana Jones-y feel throughout the game.
As I personally like this game a lot, I give it my seal of approval!
